The primary function of a protection dog is to serve as a deterrent, but capable of backing up his bark with action if necessary.
In this day and world we live in, there are many human elements that are a threat to our safety and well being. Just pick up the paper or turn on the evening news.
Many of us have taken measures to protect our home, family, and business,
using security systems, firearms, bars on our windows, and heavy duty doors
and locks. The dog is the oldest security system known to man, and in our
belief, still one of the best to ward off people with criminal intent.
The domesticated dog has been living with his human companions for thousands of years. Many breeds were intentionally created for the purpose of protection and many other duties as well. This protection drive has diminished over the years due to poor breeding and the popularity of the show ring. However, there are still those of us who believe that working traits such as; intelligence, courage, confidence, steady nerves, trainability, physical and mental stability, etc, are more important than the looks of the dog.
Protection dogs are not attack dogs. They are not vicious. They are extremely stable dogs that are taught an extra responsibility-to be protector of their family and to meet aggression with aggression 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at a moments notice. A well trained protection dog is a friendly, loving, and social animal that is truly an asset and a pleasure for anyone to be around.
